Opportunistic Exercising for Teacher-Moms

Do you constantly feel overwhelmed, tired and seriously guilty that you just can’t get a training session in every week?  Don’t worry sister!  I’ve been there!  Let’s be honest.  There’s just no time or physical and mental energy left for you to do anything but get through the front door after a day of hustling and getting the kids to school and back in one piece!  So why not change your idea of exercising from “when” to “if”.  Sound crazy?  Read on my dear friend!

Since becoming a teacher and, especially, a mom, my drive and desire to exercise has gone completely out the window!  Having to juggle a full-time job and try to be a present and involved parent, leaves me with zero energy and very little time to do anything self-care related – and I am sure that almost all moms feel this way at least some of the time.

In the past I would spend extensive “free” time searching for ways that I could better manage my time and make exercising a possibility.  I would get up early in the morning when my baby was sleeping, get two minutes into a sweat and she would start crying.  Urgh! It was an absolute waste of mental effort.

But now?  I have come up with a way to improve my daily mood and energy level, to get my heart rate up and ditch the guilt!  I call it… Opportunistic exercising!!!  So what on Earth am I on about?  Let me lay it out for you.

Looking for opportunities

Constantly look for opportunities to exercise.  If your daughter is building a jig-saw puzzle but wants you to sit right beside her – no problem!  Do five push-ups, help her add a piece, then do five more!  If you are playing outside with your boys, run to wherever you need to go next as fast as you can, or better yet, do lunges and side squats to get you there.  I love this!  I literally do it when I walk from my kitchen to my bedroom.  Ladies, its something!  It’s a very small opportunity to get those muscles engaged and that heart-rate up.  I promise you it will make you feel so much better after a long, hard day at the office!

The great thing about being an opportunistic exerciser, is that you don’t really have to commit.  You just do what you can, when you can.  Once you start to make this a habit, it won’t be long and you will feel so good and so motivated that you start to try find opportunities where you can fit in more exercises and for longer periods of time.

This strategy may not be the answer to getting you ten kilograms lighter, but it may just be what you need to fire you up, make you feel energised and just get you to spend more time with your family instead of slumping on the couch at the end of each day.

Below is a list of simple bodyweight, ‘do-anywhere’ exercises that you can implement in your “opportunistic” moments.

Easy opportunistic exercises

Legs:  Lunges, squats, calf-raises, jumping jacks, run on the spot.

Arms:  Push-ups!!!

Abs:  Crunches, plank, mountain climbers

Heart rate boosters:  burpees and jumping jacks

And there you have it!  Stop stressing about what you can’t get done in a week, and just focus on what you can do now in the moment!  Reward yourself for every small opportunity that you take advantage of today!  If you would like to hear more from me on how I manage my weight, health and life, be sure to subscribe to my monthly newsletter!  Its full of great content and free resources that I know you will love!

The Perfect Teacher Planner to Start the New School Year

Let’s face it! There’s no point starting out the new school year without your teacher planner ready to go! You know that day one will leave you completely overwhelmed and unorganized if you don’t have it.   A teacher planner is more than just brainstorming your lesson ideas; it’s a way of life! Every teacher knows that there are so many administrative tasks that are part of the job and your seemingly fantastic day can get real bad, real quick if there is a form or a parent’s contact number that you can’t find.

Life is crazy on its own, so having a reliable teacher planner to maintain your sanity is an absolute must. But, these days teacher planners are becoming a bit over the top and it takes your more time to put the thing together, than it does save you time – which is what you wan’t right? To save time and be organized!

I grew up with anxiety. When I started teaching, my anxiety went through the roof and I was diagnosed with Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) and Major Depression. I was always overwhelmed and reached burnout very easily.

I knew something had to change if I was going to save my sanity. The best way that I have controlled my anxiety levels, is through planning. Since being diagnosed, I have never gone a year without a pre-made work diary.

Although this diary was working well for me, I knew I could be more organized and save more time if I had my own customized teacher planner. And so, I created one myself.

Now, I am absolutely obsessed with creating teacher planners for teachers who are feeling like I used to feel. But the planners I create are super simple so that they don’t turn into a massive block of cute, irrelevant information and forms.

My planner has to include more than just class forms and lesson planning. I need to have designated pages for student information and intervention. I like to have pages where I can jot down ideas for upcoming lessons, as well as be able to set goals for myself as a teacher and goals for how I am going to improve my students overall performance. This always keeps me motivated and on track, and by writing down these goals, I feel that I achieve them in less time and with less resistance.

For my planner to meet my needs it must be:

EDITABLE: I need a planner that I can edit on the fly. You know, as a teacher, things change – and ALL the time! So I need to have a planner saved to my computer documents that I can easily customize and print as I need.

PRETTY AND CUTE: Let’s face it! Every teacher wants to have cute and pretty things!! For me, if my planner is pretty and cute – I am more inclined to use it and it pumps me up to do great things!

ADAPTABLE: Having a planner that isn’t chunky with unnecessary information is a must for me! The beauty of this planner I created is that you can print the lesson planning sheets or the calendar months as you need them. You don’t need to print the entire year’s worth of sheets and carry that around with you!! And then as a month or a week passes, you can easily remove them and throw them away. In order to do this with the most ease, a The Happy Planner punch and The Happy Planner Mini Disks are essential – AND THEY MAKE YOUR PLANNER SUPER CUTE!!

AFFORDABLE TO CREATE: Most of the planners I see these days are really beautiful, but very expensive to print and put together – and let’s be honest, most of those pages you don’t need! So I prefer planners that have a touch of color and a touch of cute and I am good to go.

Changing Your Mindset About Being an Online Entrepreneur

We all have big dreams that we push to the back of our minds because of our limiting beliefs. If we can change the language of our thoughts and we start believing in ourselves, we can start taking action today and move one step closer to reaching our dreams. Change your mindset today so that you can see what you are truly capable of and start crafting the life that you deserve.

Limiting beliefs are thoughts that we have or things that we tell ourselves, that we often don’t even notice that we do. As soon as you become mindful of the language you are using to speak to yourself, you have the ability to change these thoughts. Changing your inner self will help you to change your outer experiences of life, and ultimately change the trajectory of your life.

Some common limiting beliefs that women experience when thinking about becoming an online entrepreneur:

  1. Who am I to do this?
  2. I am too old, too fat, not pretty enough..
  3. I am not an expert, I don’t have a qualification in this…
  4. I don’t have any money to get started.

Do any of these sound familiar? Try to be mindful today and listen to what you are telling yourself. Write down all the limiting beliefs that you catch yourself thinking.

One of the most important things to remember about starting an online business, is that you should be doing it from a place of service to others. If you change your thoughts to center around how you can help others, then you are likely to be less worried about insignificant aspects of yourself that don’t define your worth anyway!

I challenge you to think about what your next step is today? Take one step at a time. Just take that first step. You will be amazed at what you can actually do if you try. Do it afraid. Do it anyway.

If you aren’t already in my Facebook Group Mommies Gone Wild, you should be. This is a fantastic place to gain support and encouragement and to hear about how you can start growing your business today.

You can become a stay-at-home mom, today, with an online business

Are you ready to make a big change in your life? This was me not so long ago. Let me tell you more about myself and where I was a few years ago, and how this has led me to where I am today. Maybe you are experiencing something similar in your life today and I would love to help you.

Before becoming a mom

About 3 years ago I gave birth to my beautiful little girl, Addison. Before she was born, I was driven by academic achievement and to be frank, I was a workaholic. I thought that the only way my family, friends and husband would accept me is if I conformed to their idea of success, which was to get a “real” job and bring home a good salary. That was it. Anything outside of this, any entrepreneurial spirit I had or the big dreams I expressed was frowned upon, because it wasn’t going to work and “making your passion as your career would ultimately fail”.

So I slugged along. But when Addison came, I hated leaving her at home after my maternity leave ended, and I had to go back to regular work life. Many would say to me when I complained about the intense “mommy-guilt” that I was experiencing, “Oh don’t worry, it’s part of life”; “she will survive without you”; “everyone else does it and their kids are fine”… Have you heard the same thing?

My turning point

Well, I finally decided that this is not for me I couldn’t bare to feel burnt out anymore, and definitely not for something that didn’t make me happy. So I decided that I want to spend the majority of my time with Addison. I want to be present for her in every way that I can. I want to be able to take her to school, to go to her concerts or sports events, and I want to play with her and enjoy it – not hate it because I am so exhausted.

So here I am, running an online business of my own so that I can eventually quit my job and stay at home with my daughter, spend more time on my physical, mental and emotional health and live a life of abundance.

Find your freedom

Even though I am not there yet, I have already found freedom, finally. And I want to help you find that as well. There is absolutely no shame in wanting more for yourself. You do not have to kill yourself trying to live up to other’s expectations for your life. Live your dreams. If there is any time to do it, its now. The online world provides amazing opportunities in any niche. You just need to figure out what brings you the most joy, and what you would love to wake up to everyday.

I would love to create a community of moms (or any woman) who seek freedom from their oppressing life (what ever that oppression may look like). If you need help today, why don’t you consider using my FREE GUIDE to explore how you can start your own business, whether this is online or local, and get it to run for you so that you can really live.

How a mom can make money online and stay at home with her kids

Computer and microphone

When you became a mom for the first time (or even the second, third or fourth time), did you want to quit your job so that you could stay at home and never miss a moment in your child’s life? Did you want that so bad, but felt like there was no way you could afford it? I did! All I have wanted, since my daughter was born, is to stay at home, be able to take her to school and never miss a school concert or sports day.

However, in addition to financial reasons, I was scared I would lose a part of myself if I decided to stay at home. To my core I am a teacher, and a workaholic. So not being in a stimulating or intellectually challenging environment wouldn’t have been enough for me and, I felt like I was called for more.

Then I found the online business world. It’s been here all along, since the first days of the internet, but only now am I recognizing the infinite possibilities it holds for me… and for you! Over the past year, I have frantically been searching for a “Plan B”. And here is what I have found. These are the things that you can possibly do online to create revenue and still stay at home with your kids and live the life you love.

1. Create digital products

If you have any knowledge, passion or skill-set that others would find valuable or helpful, you can turn this into a digital product. No shipping required. Just a simple upload to your website or other platform for your customers to download when they purchase. These digital products can be in the form of a PDF document, an E-book, a video training series, an email course, a full digital/online course or any other type of content that can be delivered online.

Here is a simple list of digital products that you can create and sell online. Disclaimer, this list mentions the products that I have bought, sold or come across in some way, and it is by no means an exhaustive list.

Types of digital products to sell

  • PDF cheat sheets or info-graphics
  • E-books
  • Video training
  • Webinars
  • Online training memberships
  • Online courses
  • Email courses
  • Digital art
  • Presets for photo editing
  • Online coaching
  • Web design
  • Graphic Design

2. Affiliate Marketing and Sponsorship

This is quickly becoming the go-to source of passive income from the online space. This involves marketing products that are already created by other people or companies and earning a commission when people make a purchase that originated from your efforts. This can take many shapes and forms, from reviewing a product on YouTube or Instagram, to dedicating blog posts or podcasts entirely about the product, program or service.

When you become an affiliate, you essentially promote a product, program or service and call your audience to take action by clicking a link that you provide, to get to them to the sales page and make the purchase. More and more companies are incorporating affiliate programs to drive traffic to their sites and to increase sales.

You may even start off writing weekly blog posts or posting videos on YouTube for fun or just to impart knowledge to others. If you gain enough traction and gain a significant following or audience, you can approach companies to advertise on your blog or channel – or who knows, they might approach you!

I hope that this helps to broaden your awareness of what people are doing online these days. There are many other ways that you can make money online that doesn’t require you to create your own content. But if you are like me, then you probably have a desire to increase the value of someone else’s life and their experiences, and the fact that you can get paid to do so is just an added bonus!

Five Reasons Why You Should Consider Starting an Online Business Today

I am sure that you have heard or seen loads of hype around starting a business online. I am also certain that your social media feeds and inboxes are continuously swarmed with pitches to get you on the online-business-train. Well, I must be honest, you should! And today!

If you are anything like me, you are longing to work shorter hours, have more time to spend with your kids and you are burning inside to get out of this body-sabotaging, stress-trench that you are in.

Let’s just get real for a second. We are all killing ourselves day in and day out, trying to get the bills paid and still make it to the next paycheck. We are constantly rushing around and burning ourselves out and doing everything for everyone else except ourselves. Sound familiar?

This is where I tell you why you absolutely must dip your toe in the online business world! Here are FIVE reasons why you might consider starting a business online.

1. You can have this business running while you still have a full-time job

One of the beauties of starting an online business is that you don’t have to invest huge amounts of money into it to get it off the ground. Most of what is needed to get the business running can be done with just your smart phone and an internet connection! You can also run this business after hours and still continue to commit to your 9-5. Your 9-5 job can help you stay financially stable as you grow and gain enough traction with your business to make it a full-time gig.

2. You can work on it when you want, and as much as you want

Some say that you don’t need to spend more than 90 minutes a day on your online business to really get it going and see some return. But, this is entirely up to you. What you put in is obviously what you will get out. If you are desperate to get a constant influx of revenue to keep your family afloat, you will need to work much harder on getting your brand and services recognized by the world. But, if you are in no rush, you could create the business as a hobby and just go with the flow. If and when it grows to the point that it needs your undivided attention, then you can invest more of your time into it. It all depends on your ultimate goals and your “why.”

3. You can work hard now, and generate passive income for years to come – even while you are sleeping!!

If you decide to start an online business that generates revenue from digital products, you will be able to create the products and leave them on the shelf of your website to be purchased by anyone at anytime. The only work that you may need to do after creation of the product, is marketing the product on social media or running ads to get your product in front of the right buyers.

4. You can make a huge impact in someone else’s life

You, my friend, have a wealth of knowledge and skills that you can tap into to improve someone else’s life. Even if you just know a fraction more than they do, they will pay you to show them the way. Yes, I am sure these potential clients could find the answers to their problems on YouTube or Google. But, this will take them hours to find and it won’t lay all the answers out for them in a step-by-step road map, and it won’t get them the results in the fastest possible time. Don’t doubt yourself here. If you have gone before someone else and made the mistakes that they don’t want to make, this positions you as an authority in that particular field.

In addition, by using online platforms you may be able to reach hundreds of people in the same time frame that you would use to deliver content or services for a one-on-one consulting business. Many entrepreneurs and consultants are moving in this direction because they can make more of an impact in less amount of time and with less resources.

5. You are able to stay up to date with the times.

Let’s face it, everything is moving online. Even pet groomers use online stores to book their furry clients in for a bath and blow dry. Whether you have physical products to sell, consulting clients to make happy or digital courses to market – online is where its got to be. You don’t want to wake up to this when its too late!
